Basic Work Habits to Reduce Eye Strain
By: Dr. Jeffrey Anshel, O.D., Visual Ergonomics Specialist
Ergonomics is a relatively new concept for many people. Even more obscure is the concept of visual ergonomics--the interaction of the your vision with the task you're performing. Following these basic work habits can reduce eyestrain.
Setting Up your Office:
- Move the monitor.
Be sure your monitor is at least 20 inches away. If you have difficulty seeing it at this distance, enlarge the image on the screen.
- Clear your workspace.
Keeping your work area clear of excess materials will allow you to see your primary viewing material easier
- Keep documents close.
Keep your hard copy close to the screen - just below or next to it. A slight deviation is OK.
Healthy Computing
- Take breaks.
Follow the "20/20/20" rule for computer use: Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds and look 20 feet away.
- Blink regularly.
We tend to blink less while viewing a computer screen than other types of near work. Remember to blink fully and often (a post-it note on the screen can help with reminders).
- Breathe!
Although breathing is an automatic function, we tend to hold our breath when under stress (like under a deadline). Take a few seconds and take some deep breaths to relax while computing.
- Have your eyes checked.
Be sure to have an annual eye examination. Measure your viewing distances and take those numbers to your doctor for the exam.
